What are the exam's four parts and its pass lines?

In short

  • The exam has 4 parts: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • It takes 120 minutes in all, not counting the time to prepare for speaking.
  • You pass a level by reaching its line in every part: 60% of the points for A2, 85% for B1.
  • The exam's final grade is pass or fail; the certificate lists the level reached in each part.

What the table means

One exam for both levels. A2 and B1 are not separate exams. Everyone sits the same papers; the exam has 2311 levels, and the points in each part decide which one is reached.

The final grade is pass or fail3412. The certificate also lists the level reached in each part.

The B1 line on the listening and reading parts. The official line is 85%311 of the points. On a part worth 25125 points that is not a whole number, so we round it up to 22125our reading. For these two parts the sources give the share, not the points: the points are our reading of it.

Time to prepare for speaking. The exam centre’s pages and the exam’s specification give 151211 minutes to prepare; the speaking part’s own description gives about 1013910. The app’s mock exams use the shorter time.

Practise on the real format

The exam centre publishes sample tests for every part. They show what each task looks like; we don’t copy them here.
